Robot Chicken!

Monday, June 18th, 2007

Just in case it didn't already make it onto the old TiVo, Robot Chicken's Star Wars episode is 90% hilarious. I heard about it somewhere on the internets and found it funny enough to add the show as a season pass. Good stuff. Seth Green continues to surprise me as actually being talented and funny. Who knew?

Things To Do When You're Bored

Sunday, March 11th, 2007

Besides spending way too much time on Jyte this weekend, I took an initial stab at making a logo for Dr. Nick Riviera's alma mater, per Matt's suggestion.

Starved Marathon

Saturday, March 4th, 2006

There's a Starved marathon on FX tonight (around 10pm). If you haven't seen the show, or missed the early episodes, I highly recommend firing up the old TiVo and catching as many as you can. It's an extremely well written, very funny show about a group of friends that frequent an eating disorder support group. I know it doesn't necessarily sound like good material for a comedy, but trust me, it's one of the funniest unseen shows on television in my opinion. Definitely a "must watch." Unfortunately, as with most great unseen shows, it probably won't be around for another season.

You Must Grep It

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

Almost everyone I work with at my current job is a hard core Linux enthusiast and they code primarily in Perl. The project I'm working on is in Java and one of the Perl guys has been transitioned over to work with me. He usually tries to do everything in the way he is used to and finds more powerful. For example, he prefers to edit his files in Emacs and does a lot of stuff via Bash scripts. I have no problem with that and he is making an effort to use the tools I'm more used to so its easier for me to help him if things go wrong.

As a "Linux person" he uses grep a lot. I use it a fair amount when I need to through Cygwin, but no where near as much as he does. I can't call it a day without hassling one of my co-workers, so I've started making fun of his chronic grepping. Last night I decided he needed a shirt. Something catchy:

As a side node, CafePress now has black shirts. Oh what a glorious day!

Another Must Attend Conference

Friday, January 27th, 2006

I saw this on Lasse's weblog and, being a person with a long hate-hate relationship with the waterfall development methodology, I find the idea of a Waterfall2006 conference too funny for words.

Entertaining Blog

Wednesday, December 21st, 2005

Here's a the blog of a contractor in the IT industry that I mentioned to a few of my co-workers at lunch today. In particular, I liked the bath tub and the candy entry in particular. It's refreshing to get a different perspective on things.

New Slang

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005

I'm sure someone has already come up with it independently, but I just came up with some new slang–jams my caps lock. As in, something that gets you angry or causes you to overreact. As you can probably already guess, it comes from people in IM or chat that have their caps lock on all the time. It "feels" like they're shouting. For example, "You know what really jams my caps lock? Those fucking Swedes and their chocolate houses."

I'm Such a Clever Boy

Saturday, November 5th, 2005

I was hanging out with my wife's family mid-week (for a funeral) and was playfully trying to convince her cousin to get a tattoo. Her other cousin, Megan, already has a couple. I offered to pay for tattoos for them both if she could convince the other cousin. And then:

Megan: I'd like to get another tattoo, but I want it to be covered by a bathing suit.
Me: Well, then you've only got four options.
Megan: I've used one of those options already right below the bikini line. I can't get them on my boobs because they won't tattoo you if you have implants.
Me: Then you're down to one last option.
Megan: Well, I usually wear a g-string.
Me: Then your options have narrowed considerably.

Security!

Looks Like Someone Forgot Their Badge

I'm glad to see my fellow employees take security so seriously. Luckily, if a heavily armed raving lunatic storms the building, they'll find that the door to the sales and marketing group is propped open with a tape dispenser. I'm in a different section so I'm safe. By the time they trick a programmer into letting them in, their berserker rage will have passed.

Script-Fu, Baby

Friday, September 9th, 2005

I played around some tonight with the Gimp's Script-Fu functionality. Script-Fu and Scheme can be used with the Gimp to script different graphics operations. A great example of this in action is the web front end for graphics / logo generation at Cool Text. I'm sure it took too long for me to stumble my way through creating my script, but I think the result speaks for itself:

activate-weiner

Now I can create "activate" logos to my heart's content, instantly. An evening well spent. Booya!

Update:

Skinner: Whoever did this is in very deep trouble.
Martin: And a sloppy speller, too. The preferred spelling of wiener' is W-I-E-N-E-R, although E-I is an acceptable ethnic variant.
Skinner: Good point.
