Enterprise Software

I was talking with a co-worker today about the type of software we both work on: enterprise software. There are about as many definitions of what "enterprise software" means as there are people working on it. We weren't really concerned with that. We got onto the subject of product management, sales, marketing, etc.

I've said before that, although you could buy software I've worked on, no one could tell you exactly how much it costs. That has always irritated me. I realize it's either the way things have to be or the way things have always been, but there's just something sleazy feeling about no one being able to tell me a price. It feels a bit too much like trying to buy a car with the salesperson trying to "work with" me to "arrive at" some price. That's when the bullshit alarm starts going off and I realize that I'm about to get screwed.

It sure would be nice to not only know how much my software costs but to realize that, much like Saturn's supposed no hassle / no haggle selling, you would know that at least everyone is getting screwed equally.
