New Year's Resolutions
While at lunch the other day, the subject of new year's resolutions came up briefly. I always have some grand idea of what I want to accomplish in the coming year, which ultimately falls well short of the reality. I think the problem I have is that I use a waterfall methodology "planning" my coming year. I need to agile it up a bit. So, this year I think I'll list some big items and then try and set up some weekly or monthly milestones along the way, reviewing and adjusting as I go. One of the items I know will make the list is to increase the frequency with which I update my blogs, hopefully without lowering my already treacherously low quality of content. We'll see how it goes.

It's not really a "waterfall approach" if all you're doing is identifying a goal. I prefer to come up with a goal, then start working towards it. It's Agile when I realize I don't know how to get there, so I just start working on what I know how to do so far. So for instance, if my big goal is to have my own retail website, I'd start by setting up version control and a database, since I don't have either of those yet. Or start by learning the basics. I know there's a lot I have to learn before I'm done, but I just get started, cause I know I can't make progress unless I'm doing something. My resolutions are usually things to work towards, without much up-front planning.
